In our television series The Story of English we traced the origins of our language and how it spread around the world. One thing is clear: American English has become the dominant form of the language. In the three-part series Do You Speak American? As revealed in the documentary, however, the answer is much more complex. Not all Americans speak English, and those who do speak English do not speak all speak the same version. On the contrary, the English used in the United States differs from region to region, among ethnic and other social groups, and even by age and gender.
As MacNeil discovers, many people shift from one version of English to another depending on the person they are speaking to and where they are. In addition, there are more than 2 million people in the United States who do not speak English at all.
To explore the question of what it means to speak American, MacNeil travels down the Eastern Seaboard from Maine to Philadelphia, where he turns west into Pennsylvania and Ohio. From there, he heads south through Kentucky and Tennessee to Mississippi and into Louisiana and Texas.
The series ends with a look at high tech language research in Palo Alto, California, and offers a glimpse into the future with information about voice and computer technology at Microsoft headquarters in Washington State. At several points along the journey, MacNeil talks to people about the language they use and what it means in their lives.
He has conversations with musicians, politicians, television and radio personalities, journalists, movie producers, surfers, military personnel, and researchers. He also elicits the help of several sociolinguists—researchers engaged in the scientific study of language in its social context—who provide expert observations on language as a social phenomenon.
Viewing language from such a broad perspective reveals that speaking American means different things to different people and that, because of political and social issues surrounding language, there is no consensus on what speaking American is or should be. Language standards vary according to the groups that speakers identify with. Do You Speak American? The series offers a rare opportunity for viewers to hear and discuss how language shapes us as individuals, as communities, and as a nation.
This program will be of interest to all language users, especially to those who have a special stake in language—whether personal or professional—including teachers, policy makers, politicians, community groups, and families. It provides a rare view into the social motivations behind language use, with thought-provoking commentary on why we talk the way we do and how we build our identities through language.
The program offers a good basis for discussion in social groups, special interest groups, and book clubs. Ideas for discussion are presented in this guide. Great Places in America
Although I've written about the good aspects of this country in other articles, it seems lately that the only news we hear about America is negative. We hear so much about job losses, home foreclosures, and nasty weather events. But there is always hope that the situation in America will improve. There are ways to make this country a better place for people to reside in if they have the desire to come here and make a living.
America must invest in its educational system instead of making cuts to the system. If you have been watching the news, you have heard that several states in the United States continue to have massive budget deficits. In addition to this, the government is cutting its spending on education. Instead of cutting funding for education, the Trump administration should make attempts to ensure that every child in America and every single person who wants to get a quality education can get one.
After all, America has the money to do this if it were a priority. America still has a very high gross domestic product or GDP in spite of its current economic problems. Many large US cities are still very car-based. Many cities, such as Los Angeles, Miami, Phoenix, and many others, consist of miles of urban sprawl. If a person does not have a car in these cities, getting around by public transportation is challenging and impractical because of the amount of time they would have to spend on their daily commute.
Traffic in the streets would be greatly reduced. People would not have to spend all this money on gas, car insurance, wear and tear on tires, and other related costs. After all, maintaining a car is very expensive. We must elect better people to the White House.
Bernie Sanders is one example of a man who would have been a much better president than Donald Trump. Elizabeth Warren would also be a good candidate. This opinion will almost certainly generate lots of controversy, but Bernie Sanders would have been a much more qualified and competent man to be at the top of the Executive Branch if he had been given the chance in Let me explain this as best I can.
Bernie Sanders is Jewish, and those of us that have studied American history know what happened the last time a Jewish major party nominee ran for President—they lost very badly. I get the feeling that if Bernie Sanders had been the Democratic nominee instead of Hillary Clinton, there is a good chance that he might have been questioned by the GOP for being an Israeli agent and that might have damaged him in the polls.
However, would Sanders have won enough of the minority votes to get elected? Please enter the email address that you use to login to TeenInk. Diversity can be defined as people coming together from different races, nationalities, religions and sexes to form a group, organization or community.
A diverse organization is one that values the difference in people. It is one that recognizes that people with different backgrounds, skills, attitudes and experiences bring fresh ideas and perceptions. Diverse organizations encourage and harness these differences to make their services relevant and approachable. Diverse organizations draw upon the widest possible range of views and experiences so it can listen to and meet the changing needs of its users.
The encouragement of diversity benefits society. In society today, most people view diversity as a good thing because it gives people the chance to experience different things outside of what they are normally accustomed to. Diversity in America is openly viewed as a beneficial bacterium, so many backgrounds and not knowing which ones are good and which ones are bad. Diversity as a wide component is a tricky thing to use and understand because it has both negative and positive effects on society such as education, violence and employment.
People have to dig deep to figure out what exactly the effect will be in the end and be patient to wait and see. Studies show that the lack of cohesion between races, sexes and cultures is due to mistrust, stereotyping, and more within-culture conversation and language problems.
When these problems are not paid attention to it may lead to an inability to endorse ideas, the inability to gain agreement on decisions, and inability to take united action.
By accomplishing this in the classroom you can avoid child unawareness and actually enlighten them about other things that go on around them with people they may be friends with or know. Another factor in a less diverse student population is bullying. Students who are different are often targets for bullying. Often when people lack knowledge of things that they are not accustomed to they are quick to judge or stereotype and make ignorant decisions.
The different aspects of diversity are very important. From so small to something bigger, diversity plays a major role everywhere every day. In some colleges diversity has been around for many years regardless of what social, racial and ethnic differences there were. Diversity can create curiosity. By being exposed to different people and cultures, a student may want to learn more about a particular group which can give them insight into how and why things work as they do and possibly a way to change them for the better.
A quality education does not come without learning something about race, religion, and culture or what is expected and what is not. Having a diverse school setting is beneficial because you learn more and so operate in the real world with a better view and understanding.
Diversity is not being encouraged throughout America; in fact some cultures would rather have contact only within that family or race, or even that religion.
Some people are not persuaded that their children need to be in a diverse setting or experience one. In reality, the work place has every gender, ethnic group and religion.
It is like saying if you say the wrong thing you may think it is funny and others will find it offensive, you have to understand why if effects someone else that is of a different background. Having children from other countries and cultures in the classroom can be a positive experience for teachers and students Canadian Teacher, 1.
It is proven that by valuing diversity, organizations bring benefits to the people they work with, their local communities, as well as to themselves. Our behavioral patterns, belief systems, principles, and ways of living are the derivatives of our culture.
Why is culture important? Read this OpinionFront article to find the answer. Culture is the invisible bond which ties people together. It refers to the pattern of human activity. The art, literature, language, and religion of a community represent its culture. Our cultural values and beliefs manifest themselves through our lifestyle. Our moral values represent our culture. The importance of culture lies in its close association with the ways of thinking and living. Differences in cultures have led to a diversity in the people from different parts of the world.
Culture is related to the development of our attitude. Our cultural values influence how we approach living. According to the behaviorist definition of culture, it is the ultimate system of social control where people monitor their own standards and behavior. Our cultural values serve as the founding principles of our life. They shape our thinking, behavior, and personality.
How we perceive things is largely affected by our judgment skills, preconceived notions, attitude, and emotions. These factors are closely linked with our culture. In perceiving something as good or bad, our biases play a role and so does our way of thinking. In judging something as easy or difficult, our attitude and our motivation levels play a key role.
Our culture determines the structure of our thinking, which influences our perceptions. People who belong to cultures that promote individualism tend to look at only the main aspects of a situation, while those of a culture that promotes collectivism tend to consider even the minor details. American culture which is predominantly individualistic, promotes giving freedom of choice to children since a young age.
This is an example of how parenting is perceived in contrasting ways due to the differences in culture. Similarly, people of Eastern cultures perceive success as being a collective effort, while those of the American culture perceive it as the fruit of individual effort. Our culture forms the framework for our thoughts and behavior. The ideas ingrained in our minds by our culture influence the way we perceive people and situations.
For example, women from male-dominated societies perceive men to be superior.

Women from cultures which dictate that their clothing should cover the entire body and even their faces, may think of a skirt or a low-cut dress, as provocative.
Research has shown that our culture does play a role in the way our brain processes information and reacts to stimuli. It is with a mixture of both apathy and disgust that places like Seattle, Portland, and Los Angeles are bringing their concerns to the public, and allowing the citizens to cast their votes. The plight of the homeless person is suddenly being put up for a vote.
Should they be supported, or should their actions of desperation to find food and shelter be considered criminal acts? By looking at both local and international examples, through evidence-based practicelet us deconstruct the stigma and look at the importance of helping the homeless find shelter, food, and support. Homelessness is an aspect of society that can intersect with many other subjects: from policing, infrastructure, disease and population health, to the local workforce and economy.
People of color, LGBTQIA, and other marginalized identities are often more susceptible to being homeless sometime during their lives due to their identity or circumstances. There are some important statistics to consider when analyzing the current population of people that are homeless. Clifford and Piston believe this dual approach to providing support while also criminalizing people who are homeless is due to a broad feeling of disgust.
Although the homeless community is diverse in upbringing, race, origin, and health, much of the media portrays the community as a health hazard. Our behavioral immune system is overly cautious, however. We tend to perceive others who look atypical as potential sources of disease. Homeless people often lack access to proper healthcare and sanitation, and they are often covered by the media in ways that refer to disease. As a result, they may be perceived as pathogen threats.
But this is where the key concern lies: the lack of access to proper healthcare and sanitation is setting this group up for failure. By providing free or subsidized housing, as well as free clinics and healthcare facilities, many members of the homeless community could benefit and become active members of their communities again.
However, there is an important underlying condition: the housing and healthcare provided needs to be without conditions. Currently, many homeless shelters are funded or run by church organizations. However, this only creates bigger problems, as it creates a conflict of interest for those providing shelter and public health officials.Boczek wedzony przepisy
Religion also restricts who has access to that care, and often leaves out the LGBTQIA youth who were kicked out of their homes, as well as others who are discriminated against regularly by these institutions and churches. Additionally, putting restrictions on drug and alcohol consumption can cause people who suffer from addiction to avoid those shelters, which in turn increases their risk of overdosing or being exposed to unsafe conditions while on the streets.
Conditional housing might appear innocent on the surface, but a number of studies have shown that these conditions often do the opposite of what they intend. For the homeless population, facilities like this one can provide the essential help they need, without the added stigma a religious facility might create. A study done in Toronto, Canadaproved just how powerful providing shelter can be for those suffering from alcoholism while on the streets. Countless studies have proven the effects of providing shelter, food, and support to the community, but one of the best case studies comes from the state of Utah.
However, the benefits extend far beyond simply helping an at-risk population. It also benefits the health and wellbeing of the general public.
In addition, the cost of treating the homeless can cost thousands of dollars a year, but providing them homes at little to no cost is surprisingly cheaper. Other cities that are struggling with a rising homeless population — such as Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles, and other large metropolitan cities — could greatly benefit from following the examples of Toronto and Utah.
Yet instead, many of these cities are working against their better interest and the interest of the general public in terms of public health by not investing in housing first, and instead forcing their homeless population further into isolation and away from town.
